Transparent toaster invented..

tranparent-toaster.jpg

The new concept glass toaster, which lets you see your bread as it browns, is from product developer Inventables. The idea is based on transparent heating glass technology and the idea is that the glass heats up enough to toast the bread. It means people can keep their eye on their breakfast and eject the slice at the moment it turns the perfect colour. This would eradicate the need to put the bread back down and run the risk of having to scrape burnt toast.

However, a traditional timer dial is still incorporated into the design, for people who are too busy to keep an eye on their bread.

A downside to the current design is that it only fits one piece of bread at a time.

Acabion GTBO Motorcycle

gtbo-motorcycle.jpg

Designer Peter Maskus is releasing the Acabion to the public in extremely limited quantities, although the price is steep at around $2.7 million US. Plus, you have to wait for 3 years while the bike is built. Its probably just as well though.

I mean, where would you drive it? And even if you could, the odds seem pretty high that you would end up as a stain on the road should you ever decide to open it up. The cockpit-like Acabion GTBO features a a 750bhp, turbocharged Hayabusa engine that is capable of hurling the bike down the road at 340mph with a 30 second 0-300mph acceleration time—and, amazingly, that speed is capped.

If all of that wasn’t eye popping enough, the bike is also fuel efficient. It can get 100mpg at 100mph and 25 at 250. Click on the Images for a larger view.

Waterfall on Brooklyn Bridge in NYC

waterfall1.jpg

While this image of a gigantic waterfall cascading down from beneath the Brooklyn Bridge looks like some wacky photoshop, it’s actually something that’s being installed this summer. A new art project will have four waterfall sculptures installed in New York City from mid-July to mid-October, spewing water from heights of 90 to 120 feet, or about as high as the Statue of Liberty.

waterfall2.jpg

The installations will cost about $15 million to put in place, but they’re expected to bring in over $55 million in tourist revenue. Because hey, nothing says “road trip” like going to see a freestanding waterfall in the middle of the East River. Which is where all of the waterfalls will be: one in the river under the Brooklyn Bridge, the other three just freestanding scaffolds in the middle of the river. USB 3.0 already being adopted by ASUS

usb_3_6.jpg

USB 3.0 could take off fast. We believe that the connectors were shown for the first time publicly at this year’s CES, and at least one manufacturer is already working the spec into their laptops. Eagle-eyed scouts at The Register spotted two USB 3.0-like ports in the Asus’ M50 laptop. But it’s sort of complicated. The transition of USB 2.0 to USB 3.0 will increase the number of wire contacts from 4 to 5. The Register spotted ports that made room for the fifth wire contact but still sported only four, meaning that Asus was framing their system for USB 3.0 even though they weren’t technically adopting the spec just yet. Given that USB 3.0 will bring data transfers up to 4.7GB/sec, we’re fine with companies pushing this technology onto us.

Contact Lens with circuits

contact-lens-circuits.jpg

We’ve seen plenty of newfangled contact lenses in the past, but it looks like a team of researchers at the University of Washington may have outdone them all, with their latest creation promising not only heads-up displays, but “superhuman vision.” That’s apparently possible thanks to a combination of lights and circuits, which they’ve managed to cram onto lens no larger than your average contact — though it doesn’t even do so much as light up in its current state (that’s promises “soon”). Naturally, the researchers have tested the lenses on rabbits instead of themselves, which they say have shown “no adverse effects” after wearing the lenses for upwards of 20 minutes, although we’ll just have to wait and see if they feel the same way after the researchers flip the switch on ‘em.

Ice Hotel

freeze-hotel.jpg

The is a taste of real life on the icey rocks, if you head 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden to check into the ICE HOTEL. Constructed annually in ice from scratch in the near-unpronounceable hamlet of Jukkasjärvi when the area’s meter-thick ice layer forms in late Fall, the hotel is built by a team of artists who are responsible for the temporary building’s architecture and overall design which includes 10 suites, the Absolut Vodka-sponsored IceBar, an onsite restaurant, and even an ice church. With no heat in the giant igloo, guests sleep in thermal sleeping bags on beds built of snow and ice, covered in native reindeer skins. Lounging about is done on chairs made of ice blocks and by nite the IceBar serves vodka at subzero temperatures in carved ice shot glasses. Recreational activities around the hotel include dogsled rides, Reindeer rustling, northern lights watching, and frozen waterfall climbing. The highlight of this year’s construction by far is guest artist Ben Rousseau’s suite, “Operation Blade” that features a barrel-vaulted space with a bed surrounded by fins of ice. The curious have until the 15th of April to bed down. Click on the Images for a larger view.

Batman Themed Cinema

batman-cinema.jpg

As more bored millionaires spend untold sums on movie-themed theaters, I’m pleased to find that not all of them are based on Star Trek or Star Wars. Yet none of those, in my opinion, can compare with the “Bat Cave” seen on Slippery Brick. This latest custom job by Canada’s Elite Home Theater Seating provides an impressive subterranean atmosphere, from its dramatic lighting to ersatz stalactites. As far as options are concerned, the sky’s the limit. The bat-shadow screen cover, however, should be a must. Click on the Images for a larger view.

Alpine’s Intelligent in Car Stereo

1-14-08-imprint

We’ve already seen a few of Alpine’s latest products take advantage of its IMPRINT sound system architecture, but now we’re finally getting a few more details on what the technology actually brings to the proverbial table. Put simply, it utilizes Audyssey’s MultEQ acoustic correction technology to “measure and analyse the entire interior space,” after which it combines results with a set of equalization filters to produce the best sound for each environment. As if that weren’t impressive enough, the integrated RoadEQ is also there to “compensate for music distorted by vehicle / road noise.” Granted, this all sounds fairly spectacular on paper, but whether or not it actually redefines your in-car listening experience remains to be seen heard.
